Takoradi, Ghana and the people of Nzulezu: “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world “, Gustave Flaubert

December 4th and we are in Takoradi, Ghana. We are on a tour with Across Africa.  It turned out to be one of the better tours.  We had at least 5 vans with about 10 people per van.  We were in port from 8-5.  Our tour included Takoradi Market Circle, Fort Orange, Bisa Aberwa Museum and Vienna Beach.  Ghana is a poor country.  Our guide gave us very little information unless we asked questions.  The first place we went to was the market which turned out to be a fish market.  Before we could view what was happening we all had to listen to a talk by the port authority about the area, how it is all controlled as to what comes in and goes out and that we are not able to visit the chained area where they prepare for commercial sales.  The port authority was with us through the whole tour.  It was a bit odd.  There was supposed to be an opportunity for those who wanted to take a ride on a fishing boat for an extra fee.  Some wanted to do it but when the port authority talked with the boat owners they got in to a heated discussion and we could tell it wasn’t going to happen.

Very poor roads and housing. A few nicer places and then shanties.

A roadside market

This is the roundabout in the center of the town.  The roads were terrible.

This wired off area is the Connery processing.  But look how the women carry heavy things on their heads.

The fishing ships in the background.  Clothing hangs off them.  Men live on them and most of the women are cleaning the catch and getting it ready to sell to locals and restaurants.
Look at her colorful outfit and turban.  She sits on a bucket and cleans fish

The women carry these heavy tin bushels on their heads full of smaller fish

Ever Oia so colorful.  I think it is one of the few joys they have in their lives…. Color   Most of these workers are women. You can imagine the smell. After this day I sent my tennis shoes for washing and sanitizing to the laundry

Look at her big container of bread she is bringing to sell and her shirt that says Dark and Lovely.

The babies are beautiful and I’m fascinated with how precious they look.

Mama is working hard with her baby on her back.

Huge containers of fish that need cleaned.

Chuck and Betsy find their way through the maze

Notice the port was refurbished by the Japanese in 2018!

Lovely ladies by the museum

Beautiful flowers down the walkway to the entrance

I liked this plaque about your name….

Inside the museum.

Many horrific displays about slavery. Heartbreaking

Notice the detail

Where Africas story is told…

Another market. Here they have dried the fish.

We see them preparing shiskabobs for a restaurant

A photo full of colorful vegetables and fruits

Look closely at the meat at the market. There are ham hocks and all kinds of parts nothing refrigerated

Here is our lunch spot.  Quite a difference from the poverty we drive thru.  It is gated and hayrides

The beach if you wanted to swim. Vienna Beach

Lots of palapas to sit under

A big pool also if you wanted to swim

Of course we have to try the local beer!

Someone found this tiny praying mantis and brought it to show Dan. You can see how small it was compared to their finger

A full bar too and a band of drummers and dancers.

Lovely outfits

The dancers

Chuck getting it on with the dancers.
